Manito, Albay: Undiscovered Wonders

A rough and rocky road that you will pursue before you reach the undiscovered wonders of Manito, Albay. It has two (2) hours ride from Legazpi City proper. An enchanted destination has an adventurous ride before you saw the places you want to discover there. Manito, one of the town in Albay that has a unique ambiance of nature. Manito is a fourth (4th) class municipality in the province of Albay it is located at the easterrn part of the province, elevated as plateau facing in Legazpi city. Manito has a total population of 21, 652 people in 3776 houeholds according to the 2007 census. The poblacion is just a stone's throw away from the seashore. It is hounded between two rivers, the Camanitohan and Buyo rivers that serve as irrigation for small rice fields and sources of the residents. The patron saint of this town is St. Rafael the Archangel whose feast day is celebrated every 24 day of October.

In 1882, the municipality of Manito emerged in the limelight by virtue of PD k.20364 establishing Manito as reservation area for Geothermal Exploration and development On June 1904, the BACMAN Geothermal Project has started its full operation and on October 8,1998, his Excellency President Joseph Estrada inaugurated the additional 1.5 megawatt power/multi-crop drying plant located at Pawa, Manito in support of his food security program.*

Manito is politically subdivided into 15 barangays.

    Balabagon, Balasbas Fabricante Estate, Bamban Fabricante Estate, Buyo Fabricante Estate, Cabacongan, Cavit, Cawayan Fabricante Estate, Cawit, Holugan, It-Ba (Pob.), Malobago, Manumbalay, Nagotgot Fabricante Estate, Pawa, Tinapian.

First destination, the Kawit Mangrove Forest.





Kawit, Manito is the small island that the local government of manito planted and reserved the mangrove trees. It has a small bamboo bridge when you are going to the island.

Next destination, the Nag-aso Boiling Lake.
 

 

      


Nag-Aso is the eastern part of manito next in brgy. Holugan. Nag-aso boiling lake is located at the lower part of brgy. Nag-aso near at the sea.

The 3-hectare Nag-Aso Boiling Lake, (also called Lake Mainit) in Nag-Aso, 50 kms. from Legaspi City and 15 kms. from the town, is located at the boundary of Brgys. Balabagon and Hulugan, right beside a ridge nestled on wide unexploited hectares of rugged land between the Albay Sea. Its name comes from the Bicolano word meaning “steaming.” With its 100° Celsius temperature, it is hot enough to boil eggs (10 mins.) and is used for geothermal power, currently powering a 160-MW geothermal plant. Because of its steam and sulfur content, the lake is also known for its therapeutic effect. During high tide, the lake is submerged by seawater from the Albay Gulf, but the bubbling, boiling water is still visible. The lake's waters are aquamarine. Rocks and soil, as well as the river tributaries, are amber and gold because of extreme heat and steam pressure.**
